Acústica Marina, recognized for its leadership in AI-driven hydroacoustic technology, has recently been awarded the Innova High Technology Fund from Corfo, securing funding equivalent to 1.2 million dollars. This achievement will enable the company to advance in the development of innovative solutions that integrate cutting-edge technology with environmental conservation purposes and services for the maritime industry.
The initiative, led by the Acústica Marina team, aims to develop a Passive Oceanic Hydroacoustic Monitoring System powered by machine learning. This system will consist of new portable devices and buoys capable of detecting, classifying, and locating acoustic signals, measuring underwater radiated sound, and integrating oceanographic and meteorological variables in real-time.
This system will enhance the understanding of the complexity of the marine acoustic environment, improving monitoring accuracy and offering a scalable SaaS model for global markets. Additionally, it seeks to address key challenges in the maritime industry, such as reducing operational efficiency losses in shipping companies and ports by improving commercial route planning and optimizing operations with real-time precise data.
It also promotes sustainability by monitoring underwater noise pollution and providing a tool to prevent whale-ship collisions, contributing to ecosystem protection during the Decade of Ocean Science.
“This fund provides us with an invaluable opportunity to explore international markets, especially in the South Pacific region, where marine conservation must be a priority,” said Marcela Ruiz, CEO of Acústica Marina. “We are committed to leading sustainable technological solutions that not only protect marine ecosystems but also position Chile as a global leader in innovation for sustainability.”
The project is led by an interdisciplinary team that includes experts in marine sciences, acoustic engineering, computer engineering, mathematical engineering, and statistical engineering. The project director, Dr. Sebastián Niklitschek, Director of AI at Acústica Marina, highlighted:
“The awarding of this fund represents recognition of the importance of integrating advanced technology into solutions for global environmental challenges and the maritime industry. We are excited to continue working on the development of tools that not only drive technological innovation but also contribute to environmental sustainability and the next steps for the growth of our system, which includes new technological services.”
The Innova High Technology Fund from Corfo is designed to support projects that utilize advanced technology to address significant challenges across various industries, thereby promoting Chile’s economic and technological development. The awarding of this fund to Acústica Marina not only reinforces its leadership in the field but also highlights the role of technology in environmental protection and the modernization of the maritime industry.
With the support of this fund, Acústica Marina plans to expand the capabilities of its Passive Oceanic Hydroacoustic Monitoring System, increase the coverage of its smart buoys, and explore new collaboration opportunities with key stakeholders in marine conservation worldwide. This project reaffirms the company’s commitment to sustainable innovation, technological advancement, and its vision of making a positive impact on the world.
